Istituto Comprensivo di Montecchia di Crosara e di San Giovanni Ilarione

Primary School: “C.Collodi”, Montecchia di Crosara

We are one of the primary schools of the “Istituto Comprensivo Montecchia and San Giovanni Ilarione”. Our institute is the result of the union of two different “Comprehensive Schools”, starting working in September 2024.

Montecchia di Crosara is a small town of about 4000 inhabitants, situated in a valley of volcanic origin, surrounded by hills grown with vineyards, olive groves and cherry orchards whose products are recognized throughout the world for their quality (wine, oil, cherries).

Our school, named after the Italian writer Carlo Collodi, welcomes students from 6 to 11 years old. The school time organization is from 28 to 40 hours a week. There are currently about 200 students, 20% of whom are of foreign countries mostly India and Morocco. Every student is given the opportunity to express at their best their potential, in a welcoming and inclusive mood/atmosphere. The teachers actively work together in the making of projects, workshops, and celebrations. Every year they suggest a common inclusive background on the basis of which they develop all the educational and didactic proposals. All this also in collaboration with the territory.

The training project includes a series of disciplines to which different times are dedicated related to age. The disciplines are: Italian, history, geography, mathematics, science, technology, music, art, English, physical education and civic education. Inside the school there are dedicated spaces such as: the library, full of books and albums of different kinds, themes and interests, which students can consult and take home. The computer room, with laptop trolleys, mats, robots, beebots, and Lego, for active, inclusive and laboratory teaching. The furnishings here are mobile and flexible and therefore allow the activation of different methodologies such as cooperative learning, flipped classroom, peer to peer. The scientific classroom equipped with tables for innovative and experiential group work. There are also outdoor spaces, such as the vegetable garden, the vertical vegetable garden and the garden where the pupils experiment and actively follow the life cycle of the vegetables, sowing and taking care of the growth of vegetables that they then consume in the school canteen.

This organization puts into practice the educational-pedagogical thinking that places the student at the center of the learning process, giving him the opportunity to experience firsthand what then constitutes the content of the lesson. In this way, growing with peers and sharing different experiences with them, he develops, reflects and also makes his own aspects of active citizenship that will make him a conscious and responsible citizen.

All actions are explained and shared with families because we recognize a solid and constructive connection between the different educational agencies as fundamental for the success of the students’ educational path.
