Arts Integration Supports Emotional and Social Growth in European Schools

A new European research initiative shows that integrating the arts into secondary school education improves students’ emotional and social skills. Called REIMAGINED – Reimagining Social and Emotional Education in Secondary Schools, the project was implemented between February 2022 and August 2024 in Greece, Hungary, and Italy. Its goal was to explore how arts-based teaching—integrated into core subjects—can support emotional expression, empathy, and collaboration.

Teachers delivered lessons that blended visual arts, drama, music, and storytelling with subjects like literature, history, and science. Students reported higher engagement in class, better expression of feelings, and improved peer collaboration. Educators also noted a more positive classroom atmosphere and stronger student–teacher connections.

A key component of REIMAGINED was its focus on socio‑emotional education (SEE). Rather than treating emotional skills separately, the arts were used as tools to nurture empathy, identity reflection, and resilience within traditional lessons. This holistic strategy encouraged both creative thinking and emotional growth.

Researchers measured outcomes through surveys and focus groups involving 85 teachers and nearly 50 educational professionals, along with around 180 students aged 11–15. Findings showed improvements in emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and empathy—“soft skills” increasingly recognized as essential in life and the modern workplace.

The REIMAGINED project was funded by ActionAid and supported in part by the European Commission, reflecting a pan‑European commitment to blending arts with socio-emotional learning to support post‑COVID‑era recovery in schools.

These positive results suggest that education systems across Europe could benefit from integrating arts-based pedagogy—not only as enrichment, but as a core strategy for improving student well-being and interpersonal development.
